Math

Our district uses Common Core math, but please don't stress! Common Core requires students to explain their thinking/reasoning, as opposed to just memorizing (aside from their math facts). Below is a list of topic areas that we cover in second grade. Feel free to make up problems or work on skills at home - some are very easy to do, such as counting money or telling time.
  • adding with and without regrouping/borrowing (2-digit & 3-digit)
  • subtraction with and without regrouping/borrowing (2-digit & 3-digit)
  • telling time (hour, half hour, five minutes)
  • counting coins/money (dollar bills & coins)
  • measurement (inches, feet, yards and centimeters, meters)
  • data & graphing
  • arrays & equal grouping (an introduction to multiplication & division)
  • word problems involving any skills from above
We also use an online math fact fluency program called Reflex Math. Reflex Math is an interactive program that promotes math fact memorization, which is crucial in second grade.
Reflex starts all students out in addition & subtraction facts from 0-10. Once they've become fluent in that category, they move to multiplication and division facts 0-10 and then 0-12 upon mastering the previous.

The students follow the directions of "Crabby" as he guides them through three different parts of a typical lesson, which involves review, teaching of a new fact, & practice to apply that fact in a chosen game. Green lights are earned for every session where the students have approximately 15-20 minutes of productive, focused, beneficial work. Earning green lights allow students to access the store, where they can change their avatar or buy accessories using coins they've earned while playing various games. They can also access new games when they've logged on for consecutive days.

Students should be accessing this 4-5 times per week and earning "green lights" almost every time they log on. They have the opportunity to access the program 4 times in a typical school week, but may also use the time at home to earn more coins or green lights, or improve their fluency.

This program can be accessed from the attached link (click on "Reflex Math" at the top of this page) or by simply searching "Reflex Math" in Google.
